Let the Cloth Adventure Begin!

Sophie lost her umbilical cord last Saturday morning and into cloth diapers she went. And I have to tell you I'm loving the cloth diapers (keep in mind I've only washed one load of them so far)! They are super easy and take just a tad longer to put on than a disposable. Not to mention the fact that they are super cute. One glitch that I've run into is that I didn't buy small enough sizes. Since McKay was my smallest baby, I went off of his size when deciding what to buy. Well, Sophie came home a pound lighter than McKay. So onto Craigslist I went on Sunday to find some covers in a smaller size. I found four x-small covers for $20 (new price would have been at least $44 plus tax). So after church we took a drive to pick up the covers in Surprise. Adding in the gas bumped up the price a little bit, but as I was leaving the girl mentioned that she had an unused diaper sprayer. I got that for half price too! Yeah! So my total spent on cloth diapers is now $182. Let's see how long I can go without wanting to buy more!

For those of you who are curious, here is what Sophie's diapers look like. I'm using Chinese prefolds (rectangles like my mom used) and a Snappi (faster and safer than pins). The prefold is a little bit big on her but she hasn't complained yet.

Once the diaper is on, I put on a waterproof cover. I bought two different brands and I'm really liking this one made by Thirsties. We haven't had any leaks and I can adjust the cover as she grows. The x-small size goes up to 12 pounds and they come in cute colors! We now have light green, turquoise, purple, pink, and one that's got flowers all over it.

This last picture is for my sister, Heather, who didn't believe I would actually hang anything to dry, ever. As far as clothes go, if it can't go in the dryer, I don't want to own it! But, the cloth diapers will last longer if I line dry them, use less electricity, and the bleaching from the sun is an added bonus. After hanging them, I put them in the dryer for 15 minutes to fluff and we're all set for another few days of diapering. Check back with me in a couple months to see if I'm burned out on washing the diapers!

A big thank you to my sister-in-law Juliana for being my cloth diaper mentor. At first I just wanted to have some for my year's supply, but she encouraged me to try them out. She was super helpful in explaining what supplies I would need and even sent me some wipes, a wet bag (for putting soiled diapers in), a wool cover, and a diaper pail liner. Thanks for your help Juliana!

Nice pic. of the diapers. When I was growing up we hung at least half our clothes on the line. Even jeans dry in about 15 min. during summer. Then we would just stick them in the dryer on fluff with a fabric softener sheet for another few minutes. It's convinient when you need your clothes dry in a hurry. As long as you don't mind the work.

So why haven't I ever thought of drying on the line and then just "fluffing" them, as you call it?! That is ingenious. I'll have to give it a try. Way to go on all your diapering...you are awesome and I have to add that Sophie's little tiny legs hanging out of that diaper are just too cute!! Oh, and I love the post above with the boys in their costumes, too! We'll have to see if we can find them:)

I still say that you are braver than I am. Plus, I totally agree about only owning clothes I can put in the dryer. Happy to see that at least one of those onsies fits Sophie, too!

They look so cute on her! I'm glad you like them, although I think I was given more credit than what was due. We can't wait to see her in person!

I love the Snappi thing, I've seen one before. Are the diaper liners brown? Newborn poopy is yellow, right :). I just went to Samsclub last night and spent $45 on a box of 200 diapers and a case of wipes (do you still have to buy wipes?), so if you stick it out, I'm sure you'll be even in no time. Not to mention the fact that I go to Samsclub when I need diapers, but I never buy just diapers, I think it was $136 out the door :)
