Contacts or Glasses?

Neither yet luckily! Parker had his first visit to the optometrist yesterday. I decided to take him in and get him checked out before school started. I was hoping that all would be well and they would send us on our way saying that he had perfect 20/20 vision. Well, not quite. The doctor said he is slightly near-sighted and also has a slight astigmatism (just like me). So they scheduled another appointment for us to come back in six months, just to double check whether he needs glasses or not.

I thought it was interesting that when I told my mom that I was taking Parker in she asked if something was wrong. I didn't realize that she never took any of us to the eye doctor until she noticed a problem (I was in fifth or sixth grade when I got glasses). I just assumed you take your child to the pediatrician and dentist for regular check-ups, why not the eye doctor? So, I was wondering, what are everyone else's thoughts on taking little kids to get their eyes checked?

My mom didn't take me until I was in 7th grade. I needed glasses badly! I will definitely take Katherine to the doctor at a young age.

Hmmm. I honestly haven't given it much thought, which obviously means I haven't taken my kids. I probably will in early elementary school, unless I notice a problem sooner.

Parker looks cute in those glasses!

He looks so handsome with the glasses on! I too had to suffer in the classroom before I went to the eye doc (5th grade). I think it's probably a good idea to introduce them early. I was old enough that I was embarrassed to wear my glasses and embarrassed that I couldln't see. If I was more familar with the idea...I think it wouldn't have been so bad.
And kids and contacts can be trouble. I got a mega infection in 8th grade (not super young, but still not very responsible) from not taking care of my contacts...so it's all kind of scary. Now a days they have better contacts though, so it wouldn't probably be so bad.

I dont think my mom ever took us either. And I've never thought about it! It does make sense, esp. if you have the coverage on your insurance plan...I'd do it too!!
